Mumbai, August 01: Amidst talks of moving the Supreme Court seeking relief for him, Sanjay Dutt spent the first night of his six-year rigorous jail term in one of the six cells in Barrack No 10 of Arthur Road Jail on Tuesday. Dutt is no stranger to the jail as he had earlier spent time there in 1993 when he was first arrested. As of now, Barrack no 10 of the high-security jail in Mumbai will be actor Sanjay Dutt`s address for at least the next two days after his sentence.

Dutt has been held in a cell in the same building as gangster Abu Salem, who allegedly supplied Dutt a consignment of weapons and ammunition 14 years ago, sources said.

The 48-year-old star, convicted for illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle and a 9mm pistol, and fellow convict Yusuf Nalwalla has been kept in two separate cells in the one-storey building.

Sources said that many prisoners gathered at the windows of their cells to catch a glimpse of the actor as he was brought into the prison on Tuesday.

There are a total of six cells in Barrack no 10 and each cell usually houses three prisoners.

Dutt spent 16 months in two spells in Arthur Road Jail after his arrest in the blasts case in 1993 and this will be the third time that he is being held there.

After sentencing Dutt, Judge P D Kode of the special TADA court granted permission for the star to be supplied toiletries, clothes and essential items in the jail.

Dutt`s bedding and other items will be the same as those for other prisoners, defence lawyer Farhana Shah said.

He will initially not have to wear the white shirt and pyjamas sported by other prisoners and these might be provided to him at a later stage, she said.

All the persons sentenced so far in the blasts case have been sent to prisons in other parts of Maharashtra, like the Yerawada Jail near Pune and the Nashik Jail.

Dutt and Nalwalla made a plea to the court to remain in Arthur Road Jail, citing fears over their security, and the judge will hear this matter on 2nd August.

We will move SC: Dutt`s lawyers

Meanwhile, lawyers of actor Sanjay Dutt said they would move the Supreme Court seeking relief for him. Dutt`s counsel Satish Maneshinde said as soon as the required papers are ready, the actor`s legal team would exercise the right to appeal and move the SC seeking relief.

He, however, declined to specify when they intended to file the appeal.

An operational order of the sentence is expected and it generally takes at least two days after an appeal for the matter to come up for hearing before the Supreme Court, Maneshinde said.

He said the lawyers had prepared Dutt for the likelihood of his going to jail in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

"We had prepared him," Maneshinde told reporters when asked for his reaction to the six-year jail term given earlier in the day by the Special TADA court here.

"Sanjay Dutt was prepared for this day. We as the legal team are saddened by the verdict and think that the judgement is harsh," he said.

Maneshinde said they would make every effort to reinforce the legal team which already consists of a battery of senior lawyers like V R Manohar, Surendra Singh and Karan Singh.
